A short scenic drive north brings you to Mossman, a charming
regional centre for the surrounding sugar cane industry. The
Mossman Central Mill hums its way through the sugar cane
harvesting season (June – October) when it is possible to do guided
tours of the entire process inside the mill.
Five minutes west is Mossman Gorge, a very accessible and
scenic section of the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park.
Here the Mossman River tumbles its way over and around huge granite
boulders, creating cool, clear freshwater swimming holes. Walk as
far as the suspension bridge across the river or explore the 2.7kms
rainforest loop trail.
The Gorge is home to the Kuku Yalanji people, the area's
traditional Aboriginal landowners. Guided bushwalks give a rare
insight into the special relationship these indigenous people have
with their rainforest.
Just north of Mossman is the local golf course where you can plan a
round of golf with friends. A little further on from the Golf Club
is pristine Newell Beach, a quiet little beachside nook
offering a boat ramp for the fishermen and a general store with
takeaway food.
Stop at a roadside fruit shop with an array of locally grown
tropical fruits and vegetables and homemade ice cream. A little
further is Miallo and Whyanbeel where an outdoor
theatre is also tucked away in the region and offers a rare
opportunity to experience live theatre in a unique outdoor setting
under the stars.
Wonga Beach is the southern watershed of the Daintree, which
extends from Wonga Beach to the lookout at the top of Alexandra
Range. This region, known simply as 'Daintree' was named by George
Dalrymple after his friend Richard Daintree. Wonga Beach itself, is
an ideal place for a quiet walk or a spot of bird watching.
Experience the beautiful orchid gardens or ride a horse along Wonga
Beach.
