Road Conditions
Roads in the Port Douglas/Daintree/Cape Tribulation area are accessible by conventional vehicle. Roads north of Cape Tribulation are accessible by Four Wheel Drive vehicles only. Can be impassable during Green Season. It is always advisable to check with the local police and read road signs.

Access to Islands and Outer Barrier Reef
Access is via local Marine Operators offering daily and extended trips. (Permits are required from the local Marine Park office to visit some islands if travelling independently).

GREAT BARRIER REEF MARINE PARK (GBRMP)
The GBRMP was created in 1975 under legislation called the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975.

Area – 345,500km sq in area (the largest marine protected area in the world)
Southern boundary is just north of Bundaberg and the Northern boundary is in the Coral Sea, south of the Gulf of Papua. 35 metres is the average depth of the water, 2900 reef systems and 900 + islands.

DAINTREE NATIONAL PARK
The Daintree National Park was inscribed on the World Heritage List in December 1988.

Area – The area is estimated to be 140 million years old and is the oldest living tropical rainforest on earth.
